Abstract: This paper analyzes the spatial and temporal variations of vegetation coverage in Altay area using the MODIS NDVI data and climate data from 2000—2013 based on the method of trends analysis and correlation analysis. The results showed that1)From 2000 to 2013,Altay area vegetation presents that vegetation NDVI value in the northern region is higher than the southern region, vegetation NDVI value in the mountains and river region is higher than that in desert region distribution pattern; 2)There are some spatial differences of vegetation cover, which shows that in central and southern parts, vegetation increases, the northern region vegetation decreases;3)Vegetation NDVI overall shows a slight increasing trend, the increase rate is 0.002/10 a,there are differences of the NDVI change trend from April to September in growth season. The increase of vegetation coverage was caused by increased meltwater and precipitation under global warming background;4)The correlation coefficient between annual NDVI and the temperature is higher than the precipitation, the NDVI of months in growth season lags behind the temperature and precipitation in 1 to 5 months before.
